At the Historic Greenwood Chamber of Commerce on Black Wall Street, Oklahoma State Representative Ronald Stewart Jr. recently met with a group of students visiting Tulsa's historic Greenwood District. Hosted by Greenwood Chamber President Dr. Freeman Culver III, the educational experience provided young people with a firsthand opportunity to learn about government, civic engagement, leadership, and the legislative process.

Representative Stewart spoke candidly with the students about his role in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, the importance of community involvement, and how elected officials help shape laws that impact everyday life. The session also included a question-and-answer period where students were encouraged to ask questions about state government, leadership, education, public safety, and opportunities for future involvement in public service.

"Your voice matters, even before you're old enough to vote," Stewart told the students. "The decisions being made today will impact your future, and it's important that you understand how government works and how you can be a part of the process."

"Black Wall Street is more than history," Culver shared. "It is a living classroom where young people can learn about entrepreneurship, leadership, resilience, and the power of community."

A Lesson Beyond the Classroom
For many students, hearing directly from an elected official transformed government from something they read about in textbooks into something tangible and accessible.
One student remarked:
"I didn't realize how much state representatives do for our communities. It made me think about how I can get involved."

Another student shared:
"It was inspiring to hear someone from Tulsa explain how leadership starts with serving people."

As the tour concluded, students left with a deeper understanding of civic responsibility and the realization that leadership opportunities exist for anyone willing to serve their community.

Events like these continue the mission of Black Wall Street—not only preserving history but preparing future generations to lead, innovate, and make a difference.
